What Is A Superscript Generator?
Superscript is text that sits slightly above the normal line and is smaller than the surrounding letters, like the ² in x² or the ᵗʰ in 5ᵗʰ. A superscript generator creates this kind of raised text using special Unicode characters, so you can copy and paste it into places that don't have a superscript button — Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Discord, text messages, YouTube comments and online forms.
In Word or Google Docs, superscript is a formatting setting. Copy that text into an app and the formatting disappears, leaving a plain "x2". The characters made by this superscript generator are different: each one is a real raised character, so x² stays x² wherever you paste it.
This tool does more than raise letters. It also makes subscript (lowered text, like the ₂ in H₂O), small caps, cute "tiny text" designs, and includes a smart Maths & Chemistry Converter that understands simple notation like x^2 and H_2O.
Superscript Vs Subscript Vs Small Caps
These three tiny-text styles look similar but are used in different ways.
| Style | Example | Position | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superscript | x² · 1ˢᵗ · ˢᵘᵖᵉʳ | Raised above the line | Powers, ordinals, footnotes, units like m² |
| Subscript | H₂O · CO₂ · xₙ | Lowered below the line | Chemical formulas, maths sequences, indices |
| Small Caps | ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ | On the line, capital shapes | Aesthetic bios, headings, minimal branding |
| Tiny Lowercase | ᵗⁱⁿʸ ᵗᵉˣᵗ | Raised, all lowercase | Whisper text, cute captions, side notes |

Superscript ¹ ² ³ are among the oldest of these characters, from the Latin-1 set; the rest live in Unicode's Superscripts and Subscripts block. For background, see Unicode subscripts and superscripts on Wikipedia.
Missing Superscript And Subscript Letters
Unicode was never designed to include a complete raised alphabet. Its superscript and subscript letters were added over many years, mostly for phonetics (writing down speech sounds), so a few gaps remain. This superscript generator fills them with the closest look-alikes:
- Superscript Q. There is no widely supported superscript q, so the generator uses ᑫ, a character from Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics that looks very similar.
- Some Superscript Capitals. There are no true superscript capitals for C, F, Q, S, X, Y and Z. The "Superscript" style uses the lowercase versions (ᶜ ᶠ ᑫ ˢ ˣ ʸ ᶻ) for those letters.
- Most Subscript Letters. Subscript only exists for a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. Letters like b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z stay normal in the Subscript style.
- Mixed Sizes On Some Phones. Because these characters come from different Unicode blocks, some devices draw them at slightly different heights. That's normal and can't be changed by any generator.
Superscript For Maths
In maths, superscript shows powers (exponents): x² means x × x, and 10³ means 10 × 10 × 10. Typing powers in a text message or online form is usually awkward, so the Maths & Chemistry Converter does it for you. In Smart mode, put a ^ before anything you want raised:
| You Type | You Get | Meaning | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| x^2 + y^2 = z^2 | x² + y² = z² | Pythagoras' theorem | Smart |
| E = mc^2 | E = mc² | Mass–energy equation | Smart |
| 10^-3 | 10⁻³ | One thousandth | Smart |
| 2^{n+1} | 2ⁿ⁺¹ | Grouped exponent | Smart |
| a_n = a_1 + d | aₙ = a₁ + d | Sequence terms | Smart |
| 50m2 · 3cm3 | 50m² · 3cm³ | Area and volume units | Auto maths powers |
Use curly brackets to raise or lower more than one character at once, like 2^{n+1}. For proper equations in documents and websites, mathematicians use dedicated tools such as LaTeX; this generator is ideal for quick formulas in chats, forums and social posts.
Subscript For Chemistry
Chemical formulas use subscript numbers to show how many atoms of each element are in a molecule — H₂O has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Choose Auto chemistry mode and just type the formula normally: every number that follows a letter or closing bracket becomes subscript automatically.
Charges on ions are written in superscript, so switch to Smart mode for those: Na^+ → Na⁺, SO_4^{2-} → SO₄²⁻. Numbers at the start of a formula, like the 2 in 2H₂O, stay full size in Auto chemistry mode, just as they should. For more chemistry help, BBC Bitesize are a great place to revise.
Everyday Superscript Uses
Superscript isn't just for homework. You'll find it in plenty of everyday writing. Tap any example to copy it.
Note that ™, ® and © are standalone symbols in Unicode rather than superscript letters, but they belong to the same "small raised mark" family, so we've included them here. Need more? Browse our Symbols collection.
Where Superscript Text Works
Unicode superscript works almost everywhere you can type. Here's how it behaves on common platforms.
| Platform | Example | Works? | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| ᵍᵒᵒᵈ ᵛⁱᵇᵉˢ | YES | Great for bios and captions; your @username must stay plain. | |
| TikTok | ˢᵒᶠᵗ ᵍⁱʳˡ | YES | Works in display names, bios and captions. |
| WhatsApp & Messages | x² + 1 | YES | Perfect for sending homework answers and formulas. |
| Discord | ʷʰⁱˢᵖᵉʳ | YES | Use in names, messages and channel names. |
| Excel & Google Sheets | m² | YES | Unicode superscript in headings won't vanish like cell formatting can. |
| Word & Google Docs | H₂O | YES | Works, but the built-in superscript button gives more consistent sizes. |
| 1ˢᵗ place | POSTS | Fine in posts and comments; profile names usually reject it. | |
| Search & Hashtags | #ᵐᵒᵒᵈ | NO | Search treats tiny letters as different characters — keep hashtags plain. |
Superscript Shortcuts In Word, Docs And Mac
If you're writing a document rather than a post, you can use built-in formatting instead of special characters:
- Microsoft Word (Windows)Select the text and press Ctrl + Shift + = for superscript, or Ctrl + = for subscript. Microsoft explains more in its guide to superscript and subscript formatting.
- Microsoft Word (Mac)Use Cmd + Shift + = for superscript and Cmd + = for subscript.
- Google DocsPress Ctrl + . for superscript and Ctrl + , for subscript (use Cmd on a Mac).
- Windows Alt CodesOn a keyboard with a number pad, hold Alt and type 0185 for ¹, 0178 for ², or 0179 for ³.
- PhonesLong-press the number keys on many mobile keyboards to find ¹ ² ³ — or simply copy from this superscript generator.
Remember: formatting made with these shortcuts disappears when you paste into most apps. If you need superscript to survive copy and paste, use the characters from this page.

Superscript Tips And Accessibility
- Use Lowercase For Words. Superscript lowercase letters are the most complete set, so whole words look neater in the Superscript Lowercase style.
- Numbers Are Always Safe. Every digit has a superscript and subscript version, so formulas and units display reliably.
- Check Important Formulas. For coursework or exams, follow your teacher's preferred format; Unicode is perfect for messages and notes.
- Keep Key Info Plain. Screen readers may read tiny letters strangely — for example, reading a superscript letter as "modifier letter small". Keep names, links and important details in normal text. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative explains why this matters.
- Don't Style Hashtags. Superscript hashtags won't link to the real tag.
- Expect Small Size Differences. Some phones draw certain superscript letters a little higher or lower than others — that's down to the device's fonts.
Superscript Generator FAQs
What Is A Superscript Generator?
A superscript generator converts normal text into small raised Unicode characters, like x² or ˢᵘᵖᵉʳ, that you can copy and paste into any app.
Is The Superscript Generator Free?
Yes. It's completely free, with no sign-up and no download.
How Do I Type x Squared?
