The double struck style is known in maths as blackboard bold. It began as a way for lecturers to write bold letters on a chalkboard: since chalk can't easily make thick strokes, they doubled one line of each letter instead. Printers later turned the habit into a proper typeface.

Double struck letters are real Unicode characters, not a font file. Most of them live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which you can browse in the official Unicode chart.

Seven capitals — ℂ, ℍ, ℕ, ℙ, ℚ, ℝ and ℤ — were added to Unicode earlier, in the Letterlike Symbols block, because mathematicians needed them first. When the full alphabet arrived later, those seven slots were left empty to avoid duplicates. Our generator fills the gaps automatically, so every letter you type comes out double struck.
